Our Network

We currently have three working groups within our network: Software, Hardware, and Teaching.

Georg Hinkel
(HS RheinMain)

Software

In close collaboration with SiLA, we focus on developing drivers and programs that adhere to open-source standards, promoting transparency, reproducibility, and seamless integration.

Christoph Otto
(TU Dresden)

Hardware

We showcase automation components that can be easily integrated thanks to open interfaces, enabling small and medium-sized providers to offer system components. Our goal is to establish an ecosystem of proven modules and support them within the community. We also aim to develop low-cost, open-source modules for use in education.

Tim Meyer
(UMG Göttingen)

Education

Our initiatives include a Lecture Series and a Thesis Database, offering projects for Bachelor’s and Master’s students to engage in hands-on learning experiences.

Use Cases

Our use cases serve as starting points, bringing together software and hardware to address real-world challenges. For example, autoOrgan.3R aims to develop a cost-effective, open-source screening platform to reduce animal testing. We break down these use cases using a divide-and-conquer approach, solving missing functionalities through small projects that can be tackled by students, community members, or freelancers.

Digital Commons

By collaborating on development work, we aim to create digital commons that can be marketed as products by industry partners. This approach not only makes products more affordable but also lowers entry barriers for competitors, challenging current monopoly-driven high prices. While some companies may be skeptical about open-source, it provides small and medium-sized enterprises with access to a market that would otherwise be blocked by established players.

Join us in shaping the future of laboratory automation, fostering innovation, and creating a more accessible and collaborative environment for scientific research and development.
